Helpful Little Helpers

The girls love to help and get into everything that we do.  They especially like to help us in the kitchen.

The other day, Derek was working on one of his motorcycles.  Instead of giving him his "alone time" we followed him outside.  =)  Derek had Karis help him clean the bike while Makena picked out a few tools and decided to work on some things by herself.

Baby #3 at 12 Weeks

I wanted to go back and note a few things about this pregnancy (otherwise I'll never remember).  During the first trimester, my morning sickness wasn't "bad" but it was worse than the other two pregnancies.  With Karis, I was nauseous.  With Makena, I had stomach aches more than I felt nauseous.  With this pregnancy, I had both!  I was always hungry and craved spicy, strong-flavored foods like Indian, Greek and Korean.  I of course wanted noodles too... something I crave with every pregnancy.

I was extremely tired until about week 15 or 16.  I took a nap with the girls every day, for up to two hours (and still felt tired!).

The time surprisingly has been going slow.  I see the doctor for check-ups once every four weeks and the time in between seems so long.

Here are a couple of shots of the baby at my 12 week appointment.

One More to the Mix

The newest baby Robinson is scheduled to arrive May 21, 2012!  Below are some first looks at the baby.

At 9 weeks:

At 12 weeks:

We have told Karis that there is a baby in Mommy's tummy.  Thanks to her previous experience with her little sister, I think she gets it... at least more than the average 2-year old.

Daddy shows Karis how she can gently pat mommy's tummy and talk to the baby.  Karis gets excited, and even a little embarrassed.  With a big grin, she leans into my tummy and says, "Hi Baby!"  Her grin quickly turns to a frown and she says, "Baby not talking!"  She doesn't understand why and gets sad that the baby won't talk back to her.

One morning, Karis told us that she wanted to be in mommy's tummy too.  I told her she's too big, to which she responded, "How did baby get in there?"  I thought to myself, "Lord, please don't make us have to explain to a 2-year old where babies come from!!"

When I was 5 weeks pregnant, I took the girls to Makena's 18-month check-up.  After the nurse took Makena's basic vitals, we were left in the exam room to wait for the doctor.  When the door shut, Karis with excitement asked, "Baby come out now?!"  it's going to be a long 9 months for Karis...

Halloween 2011

The cow and the kitty had a great time trick-or-treating for the first time.  We went to a few houses on our street and then walked over a couple blocks to visit a few friends in the neighborhood.

Karis was eager to go to each door.  After she was given one or two pieces of candy, she gladly helped herself to the candy bowl and grabbed a few more.  She came home with more than twice of what Makena had!

Makena just wanted to eat the candy as she received them.  She was quite frustrated when she learned that that wasn't happening.

We ended the evening by checking out the loot, giving out some more candy from our door, and then putting down both sugar-loaded kids for the evening.

Trunk Or Treat

Our church had a Trunk a Treat event where cars lined up and gave out candy from their decorated trunks.  They had bounce houses, movies, crafts and hotdogs.  Derek was the grill master for the evening and served about 400 hot dogs!  The girls enjoyed collecting candy and playing in the bounce house.

Makena found a new friend -- a little girl who I don't think she's ever met before.  Makena kept going over to her to hug her and then would look at me and point to her, as if she was saying, "I LIKE her!"

A Fall Visit

On Thursday, October 20, we headed out to Gradma's house.  The weather was much milder than when we last visited a couple months before.  It was 90 degrees during the day which made it bearable to spend some time outside.  The girls did pretty well on the car ride thanks to a friend's portable DVD player.

As usual, the girls enjoyed their daily walks helping Nana walk Riley.

There were plenty of story times with Nana.

But no naps for Karis for the five days we were there led to dozing off in Nana's lap.

On Saturday, we went to Derek's cousin's place.  Kim and Casey live in Phoenix which was about 45 minutes away.  We spent time with them and Bella, their 3-year old daughter.  The kids loved being outside and playing with lots of toys.

We also got to visit with Aunt Alice who drove out from Indiana that weekend.

On Sunday, Derek and I left the girls with Nana and headed to the stadium to watch our first live NFL game -- Steelers vs. Cardinals.

The indoor stadium was beautiful and we enjoyed the controlled climate (read: no Arizona sun beating down on us!).

There were probably more Steelers fans than there were Cardinals fans.  It felt like a home game.

It was a great game.  We witnessed Steelers' longest touchdown pass thus far -- 93 yards!  The Steelers won 32 to 20.

Derek's update

For about the first 18 months of Makena's life, she has really been a "momma's girl." I think a lot of that stems from the fact that Lena has been the primary parent in her life. When it was just Karis, we both shared the responsibilities (and enjoyed them, too). But when Makena was born, we split the load to make it easier. As such, Lena started with Makena because of the breast-feeding and then stayed with Makena for nighttime routines.

How that plays out is that whenever I have tried to ask Makena to come to me for hugs, kisses, whatever, so typically does a 180 and runs directly to Lena. Funny for me at first, but now it has been getting old. Well, this past month Makena has turned a corner and now will come to me (un-baited even!) and give hugs and kisses. Ah, to finally feel the love in return. I was reading a friend's blog recently about their adoption. He noted that their daughter when first meeting the couple would get scared of her soon-to-be dad and would even cry. I wanted to say, "I know how you feel" so that he wouldn't think it's always hunky dory with a natural born child. But I truly don't know how he feels. And, she has warmed up to him now, too.

We sold my Mazda recently. We're going to try the one-car family thing. I have always wanted to be a more faithful motorcyclist, and now I have that opportunity. The first week after it sold, I got cold in a nice downpour on the way to a morning coffee. I had packed my rain gear, liner, and bags covers because there was a chance it could rain late that night. But by 7:15 am I was all ready drenched. I survived without melting. Now that it is going to start getting colder and raining, we'll see how well I hold up in the daily commute. For the record, it is only 1.5 miles to work for me. I can bicycle, walk, or even catch a ride from several folks.

Lena worked two days in a row this week. The second day I returned home to relieve daycare, it was the second consecutive hot day (92 and then 96 or so) and the girls hadn't been outside either day. To escape their craziness of being couped up in the house for two days, I decided to take them out for dinner and ice cream. Then I realized I didn't have the car. Fun! I couldn't go back on my promise at this point. I hooked up the carrier behind the bicycle and spent what seemed like forever getting everyone geared up and buckled in for the ride. Makena had a tough go of it because of her position in the carrier, her helmet gets pushed forward down into her face. She whined the whole ride while trying to force it up off her face (Bless her heart!). They loved the Chick-Fil-A nuggets and ice cream cones. Makena actually downed hers before Karis. Karis took her sweet little time taking licks and then the tiniest bites. Of course, she didn't speed up even after my repeated requests as it was getting dark. Thankfully, there is only a small portion of the ride on streets because Irvine has some great bicycle trails. Although, I may need to invest in lights to see and be seen.

Our neighbor graciously donates her sons' books to our girls. There are a lot of Dr. Seuss books. "Hop on Pop" was confirmation for both Karis and Makena that it's fun bouncing on Daddy's belly after a meal even when I urge them to stop. At bedtime last week, Makena showed a bit of her creativity. We were all lying down in Karis' room at bedtime. Makena has the shortest attention span when we read books, so we didn't think anything of it when she got up and started moseying about. But that is when she walked over to Karis, quickly sat down on Karis' stomach, and then proceeded to bounce on Karis. The look on Karis' face was classic. Wish we had it on film. We all had a good hearty laugh at that one.

On the flip side of that fun, Makena likes to do everything sister does even if it means both girls having the croup for the past week. Makena is going on a week and a half and still has a lingering noise in her chest. Seeing doctor on Monday. Karis was sitting atop her mini couch that was on top of our couch. Karis got down to do something when Makena tried to climb up the "second story" couch. Being the good Dad I am (foreseeing the catastrophic consequences if I were to let her climb it), I removed the kids' couch and set it on the floor. With it now gone, Makena decides to run back and forth on the couch. About her third trip, she doesn't slow down enough and bangs into the cushion with her body, her melon head keeps moving forward as it was taller than the cushion and has yet to meet resistance. The fluffy cushion responds and with the combo of the head still moving forward thrusts Makena up and over the couch. She landed pretty darn hard. That was the longest that Lena and I had witnessed her cry. She seems to have only bitten her lip with no other lasting marks (THANKFULLY). Such an awful feeling not being able to protect your child (far worse than hearing that awful "seal bark" cough from their little bodies when the have the croup).

Here's a quotation I ran across that I found valuable.

"Most kids hear what you say;
some kids do what you say;
but all kids do what you do."

A Love For Reading

Karis loves to read books.  She will go through a whole bin of books and "read" each one, page by page.  If you catch her looking at one of her favorite books, you might even think she can read because she's got the pages memorized.

The other night, she wasn't tired so I let her stay up to read books.  She was again going through her bin.  She had finished the books piled to her right and still had about ten more in the bin.

I'm hoping Karis will learn to read soon because she definitely wants to... and maybe then Derek and I won't have to read the same books over and over again.  =)  She learned all her letters when she was about 26 months old.  Now she can tell you what letters certain words start with.  Or, if you give her a letter she can tell you what word starts with that letter.  It's a start!

Here's a video of Karis.  She spelled her name several times on a different day.  But of course when I pull out the video camera she gets all mixed up and can't spell her name!

Makena likes to look at books as well, so hopefully she will learn to love to read books as well.

Makena, As You Turn 18 Months Old

Makena, you are 18 months old!  I don't know how you became a big girl so fast!
Shortly after you were born, I began praying that because of your faith, your prayers would move mountains.  I continue to do so today.  To my surprise, one of your first words was "Amen!"  Now, every day at every meal you put your hands together to remind Daddy or me to pray.  I don't know how you remember, but you want to pray at EVERY meal, EVERY day.  And as much as you love to eat, you sit there with your hands together until the prayer is over.  But, if prayers are too long for you, you aren't afraid to call out, "Amen!" to declare that it's time to eat.
You are definitely the happiest when you are eating (you are in the 75th percentile for weight).  You are a great sleeper.  You rarely wake up in the middle of the night and you love to take naps.  You have gotten way more attached to your pacifiers in the last month or so.  Instead of just sleeping with them, you now like to have them while at home.   When you wake up, you are always content hanging out in your crib with your pacifiers and bunny blanket.
When you're awake... well it's a different story.   You are loud and strong-willed.  You know what you want and you aren't afraid to express it.  To be honest, it can be frustrating, but I know it's going to develop into a beautiful thing when you are older.  I don't really blame you for getting so upset when you need something, don't get what you want or get something taken away from you.  Having a sister only 15 months older hasn't been the easiest thing.  Plus, I think Daddy and I expect a little too much from you for your age.  You definitely hear the word, "no" from all three of us a lot.  It must be frustrating and thus the reason you can be so vocal and adamant about things.

It's obvious that you think you are a 2 year old.  You want to do and have everything Karis does.  You copy everything she does from falling down to reading books to grabbing things and saying, "Mine."  I let you get away with too much, just to have a few free minutes.  One example is markers.  I let you play with them because it keeps you occupied, but then you write on inappropriate things, like your belly...
You are doing well with speaking words.  Though each word you say isn't clear, you are definitely building up a good vocabulary.  I'm always amazed at how much you can understand as well.

I love to hear you giggle.  You are quite ticklish.  You love to push the baby stroller around.  It's fun to see you play with dolls because Karis never did.
You love buckles.  Thanks to you, every buckle in our house is always buckled at all times.
Makena, I am so in love with you.  No matter what you do or how loud you are, I can't stop hugging and kissing you (I've been meaning to look up what the long-term effects are of constant  smothering on a child).  I'm trying to enjoy every day with you because I know the days will fly by.  Mommy and Daddy love you so much!

Today's Pics

On our "Family Day" we discovered a zoo not too far from us -- The Orange County Zoo. It's a great little zoo that's not crowded and has plenty of animals for the girls to enjoy.

While we were there, we ran into a friend with his daughter who is about seven months younger than Karis.  It was fun to catch up with our friend and for the girls to play together.
